How Eyeglasses Work to Correct Your Vision in Tarrytown

Eyeglasses are the most common medical intervention in the world. The majority of people will need some sort of vision correction at some point in their lives. In order to get the most beneficial correction for a patient’s vision our Hudson Valley Eye Associates practice conducts comprehensive eye examinations in order to develop Tarrytown eyeglass prescriptions for our clients.

Tarrytown eyeglass prescriptions work by helping the eye focus light more effectively. The retina at the back of the eye is made of cells that react to light, that reaction is sent to the brain, which translates it into an image. When the vision is perfect the light is focused directly onto the retina after the light rays have been shrunk and curved to fit the curve of the retina. In a person that has trouble seeing objects at a distance, nearsightedness, the light is focused in front of the retina and for those people who have trouble seeing objects close to them, farsightedness, and the light is focused behind the retina. The lenses in eyeglasses are curved and they will curve the light coming into the eye before it reaches the eye to focus it directly on the retina. Convex lenses that curve in slightly are generally used for nearsightedness because they push the focal point back towards the retina, while concave lenses are curved to bend the light to the center slightly and push the focal point for patients with farsightedness forward on the retina.

Often our patients have vision correction needs that are more complex than straightforward nearsightedness or farsightedness. A patient may have astigmatism in addition to one of the other focal problems. Astigmatism is a condition where blurriness is caused by a second focal point in the eye caused by an irregularity in the eye’s curvature. Many people, especially as they age develop vision that exhibits both nearsightedness and farsightedness needing multi-focal corrective lenses. Our optical shop has the ability to fabricate eyeglasses that fulfill any of these Tarrytown eyeglass prescriptions as well as other specialty vision corrections.
